Retreat of Serson Ice Shelf
09.11.08 -- As recently as the early 1900s, the northern coast of Canada's Ellesmere Island was fringed by a continuous expanse of ice. By July 2008, warming Arctic climate had reduced the continuous ice to five isolated shelves. In July and Aguust three of the shelves experienced further significant retreat.

Both Routes Around Arctic Open at Summer's End
09.09.08 -- As of the first week of September 2008, Arctic sea ice extent had not fallen below 2007's record low, but for the first time since satellite observations began three decades ago, sea ice retreated enough to create open waters all the way around the northern ice pack.

Wintertime Disinteghration of Wilkins Ice Shelf
07.19.08 -- On the Antarctic Peninsula, the Wilkins Ice Shelf historically extended toward Charcot Island in the northwest, and Latady Island in the southwest. By July 2008, the ice shelf's connection to Charcot Island, which had helped to hold the shelf in place, was nearly gone.

2008 Arctic Sea Ice Concentration Map
03.18.08 -- Using the latest satellite observations from early 2008, NASA researchers and others report that the Arctic is still on 'thin ice' when it comes to the condition of sea ice cover in the region. This ice concentration map from March 9, 2008, shows maximum extent of sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere.

Arctic Sea Ice Distribution by Age
03.18.08 -- The sea ice in the Arctic is much younger than normal, with vast regions now covered by first-year ice. The left image shows February distribution of ice by its age during normal Arctic conditions (1985-2000 average), and the right illustrates February 2008 Arctic ice age distribution.

Algae Bloom in Antarctic Sea Ice
03.12.08 -- It was late summer 2007 in the Southern Hemisphere when NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of Antarctica's Ross Sea (left). The image reveals a subtler sign of the growing season: The yellowish-green tinge of some of the sea ice is probably a bloom of algae.

Mega-iceberg A53a, South Atlantic
03.05.08 -- Astronauts captured images of this massive iceberg from the International Space Station on Jan. 18, 2008. At the time, the iceberg was in the Atlantic Ocean some distance from Tierra Del Fuego in South America. Glaciologists think this iceberg is fast approaching the point of breaking up.

Signs of Summer Thaw on the Antarctic Peninsula
02.06.08 -- The tip of the Antarctic Peninsula showed seasonal changes in late January 2008. Images captured on Jan. 24 and Jan. 30 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite show a dramatic color shift, signs of the summer thaw.

Retreat of the Tasman Glacier
01.25.08 -- The Tasman Glacier, New Zealand's longest, is one of 12 that may not recover from recent melting. In November 2007, New Zealand's government announced that ice volume in the country's Southern Alps had shrunk nearly 11 percent over the previous 30 years.
